Paul Bettany Jokes Robert Downey Jr. Stole His Marvel Legacy — What He Really Meant
Paul Bettany has been part of the Marvel movies for longer than almost anyone, and he knows it. So when he joked that Robert Downey Jr. stole his legacy, fans knew right away that it was a joke between two old Marvel friends, not a real argument.
The comment came while Bettany was promoting VisionQuest, his new Marvel series on Disney+. Here is what he actually said, why it made sense, and what VisionQuest is about.
What Paul Bettany said
During a BBC Radio 1 interview with film critic Ali Plumb, Bettany talked about his place in Marvel history. He said he had briefly held the title of the longest-running person in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Then Downey came back as Doctor Doom, and that changed things.
“I was [the longest-running person in the MCU] for a moment… He stole my legacy, as he has stolen so many other things from me. Maybe I still outlast him. We’ll see,” Bettany joked.
The key word there is joked. Bettany and Downey have worked together since the very start of Marvel’s movie universe, and Bettany has often praised Downey in interviews. He has even argued that Downey deserved an Oscar for his work as Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame. This was friendly teasing, not a complaint.
Why the joke works
Bettany’s Marvel story really does go back to the beginning. He first appeared in the franchise as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s AI assistant, in Iron Man in 2008. He then became Vision, a physical character, in Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015.
Downey, meanwhile, played Tony Stark, also known as Iron Man, for a decade across ten films. His character died in Avengers: Endgame. Then, in a surprise revealed at Comic-Con in 2024, Downey returned to Marvel in a completely different role: the villain Doctor Doom.
So the joke lands because both men have been around since day one, and Downey’s return as a villain is one of the biggest surprises in Marvel history. Bettany held the “longest-running” bragging rights for a short time, and then his old co-star took the spotlight again.
What is VisionQuest?
VisionQuest is the new Marvel series starring Bettany as Vision. It premiered on Disney+ in the US on October 13, 2026, with two episodes, and it runs for eight episodes in total. The finale is set for November 10, 2026, in the US.
The show is the closing chapter of a story that started with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along. In it, Vision is dealing with who he is after everything he has been through: built, broken, rebuilt, and left trying to work out what his memories mean and what his purpose is now.
James Spader returns as Ultron, and Ruaridh Mollica plays Thomas Shepherd, a young character who may be connected to Vision’s past. Terry Matalas is the showrunner. Bettany has compared Vision’s search for identity to the story of Frankenstein’s monster, a creation asking who made him, what he is for, and whether he is good or bad.
Will Vision meet Doctor Doom?
That is the question fans are asking, and right now there is no confirmed answer. Bettany is not on the announced cast list for Avengers: Doomsday, which reaches theaters on December 18, 2026, with Downey leading the cast as Doctor Doom.
Bettany has said he believes he will appear in Secret Wars, the film planned after Doomsday, and that he will keep playing Vision as long as he is asked. Nothing about a Vision and Doom meeting has been officially confirmed, so any talk of it is speculation for now.
For now, the “stolen legacy” line is best read for what it was: a funny moment on a press tour, from an actor who has spent nearly twenty years inside Marvel’s world, poking fun at the friend who came back and stole the show again.
